Urological Surgeon
Dr Akbar Ashrafi is a highly qualified specialist urological surgeon who has trained extensively in Australia and the United States.
He has substantial experience in managing all adult urological conditions including elevated PSA related to prostate cancer, BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy), kidney stones, and bladder and testicular cancers. He also has a subspeciality in advanced robotic surgery and major cancer surgery (urologic oncology). His training in robotic assisted surgery enables him to perform complex procedures through tiny incisions, leading to less post operative pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times for patients.
Dr Ashrafi values each patient as an individual and creates a personalised treatment plan according to their needs. Using a collaborative approach, he consults with the patient and their General Practitioner to achieve the best possible outcome. He is committed to delivering the treatment plan with the highest degree of care and technical expertise.
After completing his medical degree from the University of Auckland, he undertook his Basic Surgical Training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, followed by six years of Advanced Surgical Training in Urological Surgery. Following this, he became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He then completed an additional three years of training in Advanced Robotic Surgery and Urological Oncology at the prestigious University of Southern California (USC) Institute of Urology. During this time, Dr Ashrafi learned state of the art techniques and was mentored by world leaders in the field, including the acclaimed pioneer, Dr Inderbir Gill. Dr Ashrafi was subsequently appointed as Assistant Professor of Clinical Urology at the University of Southern California.
Dr Ashrafi is committed to ongoing research and education. His research has been presented at numerous national and international conferences including Society of Urologic, Oncology North American Robotic Urology Symposium, European Association of Urology, American Urological Association, World Congress of Endourology and Société Internationale d'Urologie meetings. He has published widely in peer-reviewed national and international journals and contributed to book chapters on robotic surgery and urologic cancers. He is actively involved in teaching students, junior medical staff, and future urological surgeons. Dr Ashrafi holds honorary academic titles of Clinical Senior Lecturer with the School of Medicine at The University of Adelaide and Flinders University. He has public appointments at the Lyell McEwin and Modbury Hospitals in Northern Adelaide and offers comprehensive specialist care to both public and private patients.
In his personal time, Dr. Ashrafi enjoys spending time with his family and pursuing his interests which include travel and cricket.
